On Saturday, October 15th Habitat for Humanity of Southern Santa Barbara County
completed a home repair in Carpinteria as part of its housing repair program A Brush with Kindness. Habitat
for Humanity provided exterior repairs and landscaping for an elderly
homeowner with help from a group of students from Westmont College, skilled
professional volunteers from Solid Rock Construction and Fine Carpentry Inc,
and local neighbors.
Habitat for Humanity first became aware of this opportunity
after the homeowner’s neighbors joined together to help repair the home. While
shopping in the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Goleta for discounted home
improvement materials, the neighbors were introduced to A Brush with Kindness and recognized that their neighbor’s home
would be eligible for the program.

Habitat for Humanity’s A Brush with Kindness program has a
goal of preserving homeownership by helping homeowners who cannot afford to
maintain the exterior of their homes. A Brush with Kindness assists homeowners
impacted by age, disability, income or family circumstances who struggle to
maintain the exterior of their home. The program’s aim is to allow
homeowners to reclaim the pride and dignity of homeownership by offering an
affordable means of exterior home improvement to maintain the value of the home.
