Celebrating Habitat ReStore Volunteers

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore recently celebrated two stellar volunteers, Frank and Samantha. Frank has volunteered over 500 hours in the ReStore and Samantha has volunteered over 75 hours. A huge thank you to these two volunteers who help make the ReStore a success.

Volunteers are the heart of Habitat for Humanity and keep our critical programs running. Below are some of the volunteer opportunities currently available with Habitat for Humanity Santa Barbara:

ReStore Volunteers:
Volunteers assist ReStore employees. Tasks include sorting, pricing and cleaning donated items, shelving new inventory and assisting customers.

Construction and Repair Volunteers:
While we are between new construction projects volunteers help with the A Brush with Kindness program which provides exterior repairs for low-income homeowners. No previous construction experience is required.

Group Opportunities:
Bring together friends, family and co-workers for a group build day. Groups help on new construction projects, on A Brush with Kindness projects, and in the ReStore.

New Items in the ReStore for 2015

With the New Year, comes new items at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. You can check online for new item updates as well as stop by the Restore. Here are some interesting items that have come in the past two months:

"Drink Cart"
Item Number: XO86
Price: $65

"Lamp Table"
Item Number: X077
Price: $125

"Hand Beaten Brass Bar Sink"
Item Number: X099
Price: $250

We have very unique and special items that are donated to the ReStore daily. Whether it is a small lamp or even a beautiful door, the ReStore has many gems that have appeal and character.

The ReStore at the Habitat for Humanity in the Southern Santa Barbara County sells home improvement products and 100% of the proceeds go back to Habitat. The materials that are sold in the ReStore are donated from the community and the proceeds help to cover administrative costs. Because of this, Habitat is able to point a large majority of the funds raised to go towards our low income building projects. Shopping in or donating to the ReStore is a way that one can help support Habitat's mission to provide affordable housing in Santa Barbara.

The ReStore is located on 6860 Cortona Drive, Suite A, Goleta CA 93117. The ReStore is open from 11am-5pm on Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Induction of the 500 Hours Volunteer Club's youngest member, Anna!

At Habitat for Humanity of Southern Santa Barbara, volunteers make up a large amount of the hours that are put into different areas and projects. The ReStore, building projects, and A Brush with Kindness projects are all completed with the help of many volunteers, and we are fortunate and thankful to each and every volunteer.

Today, we have a volunteer who we would like to thank for her time here at Habitat. A Santa Barbara local and student who attends UC Davis, Anna has been volunteering with us in the ReStore every summer since 2012 and we are blessed to induct her into the "500 Club".

The "500 Club" is a group of volunteers who have put in over 500 hours of service and time at the Habitat ReStore. You can recognize members of this awesome group of volunteers by their ReStore hats.

Currently, Anna is the youngest member of the "500 Club", and received her member hat on her last day today.  We are so thankful for her service and time and wish her the best as she goes off to England to study abroad.

More space for donated building material

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Goleta raises funds to help Habitat build affordable homes in the Santa Barbara areas. And,  it keeps usable materials out of the waste stream and into home building, remodeling and creative arts projects. Recently the ReStore expanded and here are the pictures to prove it!

Creative reuse ideas from the ReStore

We love creative ways to reuse and re-purpose old building materials, and what better way then to see them turned into beautiful flower displays!

Candace, one of our most dedicated ReStore volunteers, made these beautiful flower displays out of an old mailbox, a sink, cabinets, and even vent material! We've seen some creative reuse projects but these take the cake.

Do you have any creative reuse projects? We'd love to hear about them and feature them here on the blog!

Do-It-Yourself projects from the Habitat ReStore

Recently the Habitat ReStore received pictures of two creative DIY projects made from recycled items found at the ReStore. We love hearing from satisfied customers, especially when it involves materials from the ReStore that have been reused in creative ways!

The first is a table decorated from students at Elwood Elementary School. Marysue emailed us to say:
"Recently I found the cover to a light fixture and four banisters. I used them to make a small table which I painted black.  Then the first grade class at Ellwood Elementary (here in Goleta) decorated it with mosaic tiles for their Spring Auction. It turned out beautifully. The table top was only $3.00 and the legs were $2.00 each."
"Recycled" table decorated by 1st grade students at Elwood Elementary

The next project is of a backyard patio. All of the decorative tiles were purchased from the Habitat ReStore.

We'd love to hear from you and see pictures of your projects. What creative ways have you reused items from the Habitat ReStore?

The Habitat ReStore will be open this Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 28th from 9am to 5pm. We've had some great donations come through our doors this week, including shelving units from our local Borders Book Store, an old-fashioned stand-up pinball machine, and many hanging chandeliers.

We've uploaded some pictures of the new inventory. Be sure to check it out, but like always, it's better to visit the ReStore in person as we're not able to photograph each item that comes in.
